This week, Andy has moved back into the top 5 of the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time since December 2007. Andy’s results this year, including most recently the Wimbledon final, have projected Andy back into the top flight of men’s tennis. Andy has picked up some big points this year, with his semifinal at the Australian Open earning him 720 points, his fourth round at the French Open, 180 points, and the final at Wimbledon 1,200 points. "Justice [Sandra Day] O’Connor has often been cited as saying that a wise old man and wise old woman will reach the same conclusion in deciding cases. I am not so sure Justice O’Connor is the author of that line since Professor Resnik attributes that line to Supreme Court Justice Coyle. I am also not so sure that I agree with the statement." (Sotomayor, from the infamous "wise Latina" speech.)
But you know, what she really meant was, "I completely agree with Justice O'Connor."
You know, it's pretty upsetting that someone can sit before members of the Senate under oath and completely, deliberately misrepresent her record and past statements. That this person is a federal judge makes it appalling.
But you know, she's just a victim of politics!!!! Or something. *eyeroll*

Hanson - "Wondering Why" |
] |
Title: Matchmaker Pairing: Ryan Star/Alex Band, implied Cookleta. Disclaimer: In my mind this is real. That's (almost) good enough for me. ;] Summary: The title is pretty self-explanatory, haha. Joey plays matchmaker for Ryan. Rating: PG? (Ratings aren't my strong point, guys.) Author's Note: So, I kind of wrote this before I found out that Ryan & Alex are friends IRL, but that's alright, since isn't suspension of reality a big part of fics like this anyway? :P Thank you to lire_casander for being a bad influence on me and getting me to write this (I threw the Andy cameo in there just for you!) and inmyhansonshirt for reading it and telling me it wasn't the huge amount of fail that I was convinced it was. (Which isn't saying I'm not still convinced of that, but um, at least I'm willing to let other people READ the fail now.)
MORE IMPORTANT NOTE: Oh gosh. For those of you who HAVEN'T read any of my writing before, this probably isn't the best introduction to it. Check out the stuff on my shiny new fic tag! because it's better. (I like this one and this one best, if you're wondering.)

Does anyone else think that Lorelai was unnecessarily harsh to her parents at times?
(Right now I'm watching 'Kill Me Now' and I really hate towards the end of the episode how she's reacting to Rory wanting to go to Friday Night Dinner instead of skipping it. And then she starts the whole 'Your boobs are bigger than mine!' thing with Rory wearing her sweater.)
There are only a few moments that I can pinpoint where it was justified (like when Emily invited Chris to the vow renewal. That was ridiculous how she did that.), but other times, it just seemed off for her to be treating them like that.
What do you think about Lorelai and her parents relationship, as well as their dynamic as a whole?

I'd rather be before a judge who hung his or her hat on the Constitution, the code, and the rules of procedure than one who hangs his or her hat on how their childhood makes them feel about certain people or issues. I have no problem with someone who has a different interpretation of those laws that has been shaped by their background, but when someone blatantly says "A judge's role is to make law," that's where I have a problem.
People who are whining about empathy and playing politics need to get a grip and read some court decisions. Start with Marbury v. Madison and see whether the Court believes it's the judge's role to interpret the law based on how they're feeling that day or what they ate for breakfast. These decisions create precedent. It's important to have jurists on the bench who understand the power they have and use it cautiously and carefully. Upholding summary judgment on a case in which there was clear discrimination and genuine issues of material fact is NOT using judicial power wisely. It's using judicial power as a sword to vanquish certain groups you don't like that day for whatever reason.
And of course, I have to get on my Judicial Diversity high horse again: I don't care how many people of "different backgrounds and experiences" sit on the bench, they all went to the same damn schools and learned the same damn things. Where's the ACADEMIC diversity on the bench? How can any of these Ivy Leaguers claim to have empathy for others when their experience stems from an elite education that only a small percentage of people have the opportunity to receive? You want REAL Change? Push for greater academic diversity in government. It's not just a Boys' Club--it's an Ivy League Boys' Club.
